Laura Cimoli
I am a physical oceanographer studying the global-scale ocean circulation and its role in regulating the climate system by sequestering anthropogenic carbon and heat from the atmosphere.
Research experience
Senior Research Associate - University of Cambridge, UK. Institute of Computing for Climate Science. 2023-present
Postdoctoral Researcher - Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego. GO-SHIP Postdoctoral Fellow. 2020-2022
PhD in Physical Oceanography, University of Oxford. 2019
Research
I study the processes that regulate the global-scale ocean circulation, how different water masses are formed and how they move around the globe. Image: Ocean flows colored with sea surface temperature. Credit: NASA.
My research goal is to better understand how ocean circulation contributes to the regulation of the climate system, for example by uptaking carbon dioxide (image) and excess heat from the atmosphere. Image: Ocean surface winds and CO2 flux. Blue areas are where CO2 is absorbed by the ocean and red areas are where CO2 is outgassed from the ocean. Credit: NASA.

As an environmental scientist, I have focused on sustainable coastal management, in particular in areas with multiple stakeholders depending on local resources. Photo credit: marinadiportofino.com.
